Cub Scout Volunteer Training

Cub Scout Volunteers, both new and seasoned, are trained through a variety of required and supplemental courses.  Most of your initial training as a new Cub Scout Leader will be taken Online.  The training you receive as a Cub Scout Leader, while very good whether offered Online or via a Classroom, is constantly being updated and improved.  As a side benefit, you may find that this training helps you, your Pack, and your family in ways that far exceed the intended learning objectives.  Welcome to the World of Cub Scout Volunteer Training, all offered to help you do your best in your volunteer role!

Different training classes are required for each volunteer position the Cub Scout program. You are considered Trained Badgetrained for your position, and can wear the "trained" patch, when you have completed all of the training segments appropriate for your program and position. Regardless of position, this should include the following:

Step 1: Online Training for Every Cub Scout Adult Leader

  • This Is Scouting” - REQUIRED once for all Scout Volunteers. This online class provides an overview of the Scouting organization, including history, values, programs, Youth Protection, community involvement, and training. The module consists of six video sections, each followed by a brief quiz. Completion is noted automatically in the BSA training records database if the module is experienced online.  This course can also be provided in person. Estimated time to complete: 50 minutes.
  • Youth Protection” – REQUIRED for all Scout Volunteers to take and re-take through a refresher course at a set interval, and Recommended for all Cub Scout Parents. It is recommended that you complete this class each year, although it is also required at a less frequent interval per BSA policy (always check for current policy at MyScouting.org). If you have already established an account on MyScouting.org and have a record of taking this class, then you can just take the Quiz again as a refresher. This is required for All Leaders, and your Alpine District leadership encourages all Leaders and Pack Parents to take this training.
  • Weather Hazards” – REQUIRED for at least one Leader from your Pack on every outing requiring a Tour Permit. As a result, it is recommended that every Pack Leader successfully complete this class both for safety and in order to properly file Tour Permits for your Pack’s outings.

Step 2: Online Training for Specific Positions

Online Training is REQUIRED for Specific Positions - you only need to take ONE of these (the one for the Adult Leader position you have volunteered for, or have moved into from another when changing roles):

    • Fast Start: Cubmasters” – This course is required for Cubmasters and Assistant Cubmasters, and it is recommended for anyone else who wants to learn about the Cubmaster role.
    • Fast Start: Webelos Den Leaders” – This course is required for Webelos Den Leaders and Assistant Webelos Den Leaders, and it is recommended for anyone else who wants to learn about Webelos Den leadership.
    • Fast Start: Wolf/Bear Cub Scout Den Leaders” – This course is required for Wolf & Bear Cub Scout Den Leaders and Assistant Wolf & Bear Den Leaders, and it is recommended to anyone else who wants to learn about Wolf/Bear Den leadership.
    • Fast Start: Tiger Cub Den Leaders” – This course is required for Tiger Den Leaders and Assistants, and it is recommended for anyone else who wants to learn about Tiger Den leadership.
    • Pack Committee Fast Start” – This course is required for Pack Committee Members including your Committee Chair (CC), your Pack Trainer (PT), your Chartered Organization Representative (COR), and any other Committee Members. This class is recommended for anyone else who wants to learn about Pack Committee leadership.

Step 3: Instructor-Led “Cub Scout Leader Specific Training” for Every Cub Scout Leader

Instructor-Led Training known as “Cub Scout Leader Specific Training” is REQUIRED for all Cub Scout Leaders.  The course format consists of a general introduction followed by specific breakout sessions.  If you have already taken this course for a previous position in your Pack, then you only need to attend the Breakout Session for your new role.  The REQUIRED Breakout Sessions include:

    • Cubmasters and Assistants
    • Webelos Den Leaders and Assistants
    • Cub Scout Den Leaders and Assistants (wolf and bear)
    • Tiger Cub Den Leaders
    • Pack Trainers
    • Pack Committee Chairpersons and all other Committee Members

Step 4: Instructor-Led Training for Some Leaders

  • "BALOO" - This training is REQUIRED for at least one Leader on every outing requiring a Tour Permit. As a result, it is recommended that each Pack designate several Leaders to successfully complete this class both for safety and in order to properly file Tour Permits for your Pack’s outings.  This important training is designed to provide the initial and basic information adults need to successfully take a Cub Scout PACK overnight camping. It will focus on the requirements for boys of Cub Scout age. B.A.L.O.O. training gives each trainee information on equipment, health and safety, and first aid.
  • Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills” – This training is REQUIRED for Webelos Den Leaders before conducting Webelos overnight camping with the boys and parents of their den.  This new course is a combination of two previous classes: “Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders” and the “Boy Scout Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills” course. Webelos Leaders will learn what they need to know to take Webelos on outdoor outings.
  • Wood Badge” – Although not required, Wood Badge is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED training for all Cub Scout Leaders - it is the goal of BSA that all Leaders attend Wood Badge within 2-years of registering as an Adult Leader.  This excellent course offers advanced training for adults in all programs of the Boy Scouts of America: Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity, and Venturing, as well as for District and Council Scouters. It is practical training primarily conducted in small leader groups, and utilizes some of the very best leadership training techniques available. You must attend all of two 3-day “weekend sessions” of your course, so you'll be in camp from the morning of the first day until late afternoon of the third day of both weekends (and that's okay, because you won't want to leave).

Why is this Training made available?

Simply put: "Every Boy Deserves a Trained Leader" which is a popular saying in the BSA for very good reasons. As Parents of Cub Scouts who volunteer to serve our Packs, we all want the very best program for our boys and their families. And to accomplish that, we as Leaders need the latest resources & a good understanding of the Cub Scout Program & our intended Roles. Cub Scout Leader Training provides us with the very best opportunity to succeed in delivering the very best program to our Cub Scouts and their Families. In short, by being our best, we are able to help the boys to do their best.

How long does it take, and how much will it cost me?

Getting started with the required classes does not take long: just a couple of hours of online training, and a half day in an Instructor-Led classroom course. Beyond the required classes, there are a variety of supplemental or optional online, classroom, and outdoor-based training opportunities available to you as you progress through the program each year as an adult volunteer. Most Parents are pleasantly surprised that you will receive this leader training for free or at a reasonable cost as you progress.
