Winners Announced at Largest Alpine District Pinewood Derby! PDF Print E-mail

MARCH 6, 2010 - SAMMAMISH, WA.  The Pinewood Derby, probably the most beloved and well known of Cub Scout events, began with one Parent’s idea in one small Cub Scout Pack in the 1950’s and spread like wildfire nationwide. Currently, Pinewood Derby races are held in almost all Cub Scout Packs. Some Districts provide a Championship Derby Race for even more fun and excitement.

On The evening of March 6th, our local Alpine District held it's largest Pinewood Derby ever at Eastlake High School in Sammamish. Over 100 Cub Scouts competed for prizes in their age rank divisions as well as for the overall Grand Champion. The Alpine District includes 33 Cub Scout Packs and stretches from Newcastle to North Bend and from Sammamish down to the northern part of Renton. “This is an extremely special Derby, and coincides with the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Scouting in the United States. We are very proud of these boys and their participation in this extremely fun event” said Philip Boynton, Alpine District Chair & MC of the event.

The Cub Scout program is designed to build values and character in elementary school age boys. Another such Volunteer and fellow MC, Julie Reed, stated “The Pinewood Derby in particular promotes Sportsmanship, Citizenship, Personal Achievement, and Family Understanding. “We take great pride in partnering with parents to reinforce these fine values in the young boys of our communities. It was wonderful to watch the boys open the evening with a Flag Ceremony and then work through the ups and downs of both winning and losing. As Lord Baden Powell, the Founder of Boy Scouting was fond of saying, ‘Scouting is FUN with a purpose’, and that is certainly what we’ve seen here tonight.”

The Event organizer, John Eberhardt, explained “This represents a great opportunity to teach our Scouts through an exciting Scouting event, and I am so happy to be serving with all the other dedicated volunteers that make events like this possible.”

The Scouts with the fastest cars at this year’s event are:

  • 1st Place: Trevor H. (Pack 200, Issaquah)
and his car, the “Silver Bullet”
  • 2nd Place: Jacob A. (Pack 571, Sammamish)
       and his car, “Dragon Fire”
  • 3rd Place: Ben A. (Pack 571, Sammamish)
       and his car, “GTS”

The Alpine District is part of the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Cub Scouts learn values and build character, while serving their local communities and participating in fun events like Pinewood Derbies. Serving nearly 2.8 million young people between 7 and 20 years of age at more than 290 councils throughout the United States and its territories, the Boy Scouts of America is the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training.

Cubapalooza - The fun begins Sat 8/21! PDF Print E-mail

What is “Cubapalooza?”  Cubapalooza is a jamboree event for youth ages 6 – 11 and their families. It is meant to encourage youth who are unfamiliar with Cub Scouts and to share the excitement and joy of the Scouting program; to give current Tigers/Cubs/Webelos a chance to work on age-appropriate activities and earn progress towards their ranks; and – most of all, to provide a family-friendly good first camping experience to new and younger Scouts.

When and where is it?  Saturday, August 21st, 2010 at Hans Jensen Park (a section of Lake Sammamish State Park). Overnight camping is available on Friday night (no program activities) and Saturday night (campfire bowl), with closing ceremonies held Sunday morning.

What are the activities?  Planned activities for Scouts include catapults, cooking, Scout games, nature walks, and emergency preparedness. Activities for Scouts as well as guests include birdhouse building, carnival games, ropes & knots, trail of the Bobcat, and water rockets.

Why hold a Cubapalooza?  As Cubs, the boys are too young to participate in this year’s 2010 Boy Scout National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. They should have the opportunity to experience the same type of event – Scout games, making new friends, and camping out in the woods with fellow Scouts. This is also a great opportunity for your Pack to work towards your Summertime Pack Award and put the “out” in Scouting!

How do we find out more?  More information will be available at April Roundtable, or feel free to reach out to John Eberhardt directly via his contact page.

Alpine 2010 Webelos Woods Weekend starts Sat 9/18! PDF Print E-mail

The 2010 Alpine District Webelos Woods Weekend will be held again at beautiful Camp Pigott on September 18th & 19th.
Webelos Woods is a fun-filled camping weekend designed to give both first and second year Webelos Scouts, and their parents, a preview of the Boy Scouting experience.  It is an introduction both to Boy Scouts as a ‘boy led’ program and to camping Boy Scout style. Webelos Woods also provides opportunities for Webelos Scouts to see and participate in several interesting Boy Scout skills and activities, and to earn progress toward many Webelos activity badge requirements in a single event.

  • Come for the weekend, or just for the day.
  • Earn achievements towards your Activity Badges, the Webelos Badge, and the Arrow of Light.
  • Visit with members from your local Boy Scout troops and learn about what each troop does.
  • Explore a Boy Scout Camp, and learn about the Order of the Arrow.
  • Your Pack’s Webelos can camp together as a group and have a lot of fun.  The adventure awaits you!

On Saturday, Webelos Scouts will be grouped together and guided through their activities by an Eagle Scout and their Den Leaders.  They will visit and participate in 10 different activity stations, each staffed by a Local Boy Scout Troop.  There is a break for Lunch that can be purchased at the Camp.  Webelos from a given Pack will camp together with their parents, cook their evening meal together, and later be entertained by the hilarious antics of the Boy Scout Troops at a special campfire program.

Sunday offers breakfast with your Pack, an Interfaith Service, a mini-competition, and a closing awards & flag ceremony. We put a whole lot of fun & progress into just over a day's time!
